What You Need to Know About Temporary Permits

What You Need to Know About Temporary Permits

What do you do when you need to travel to a jurisdiction that you have never been and don’t have the proper registration? Get a temporary permit!

When Are Temporary Permits Required?

International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)
IFTA reporting applies to all vehicles with:
  • Two axles and more than 26,000 lbs or
  • Vehicles with 3 or more axles regardless of weight when traveling in two or more jurisdictions (states)

You will need a temporary fuel permit if you will be traveling to another state without an IFTA decal and license.

International Registration Plan (IRP)
Applies to all vehicles with:
  • Two axles and more than 26,000 lbs or
  • Vehicles with 3 or more axles regardless of weight when traveling in two or more jurisdictions (states)

You will need a temporary trip permit if you are traveling to another state if the vehicle is not registered under the IRP. The trip permit must be obtained before entering the jurisdiction, and since processing costs and times vary based on state, it’s best to inquire as soon as you know you’ll need one.
