Are you a driver of a vehicle weighing 55,000 pounds or more? Then you need to be aware of this important deadline!

Form 2290 is an IRS tax form that must be filed annually for the upcoming tax year. By filing now you are paying your tax in advance and do not have to worry about paying it again until next year. The Form 2290 tax year goes from July 1st to June 30th of the following year. This is important to know because a vehicle’s Stamped Schedule 1 expires on June 30th.

A Stamped Schedule 1 is important because it is used to get a vehicle’s tags and registration and can only be obtained by filing Form 2290. If a vehicle is found without a current Stamp Schedule 1, this can lead to being pulled over and penalized. If you do not pay the tax or file Form 2290 at all before August 31st, fines will occur.

If Form 2290 is filed late or the tax is not paid, you will be charged late fines, and the fine for not filing Form 2290 is actually greater than the fine for not paying the tax.

For every month the deadline is missed there will be a fine of 4.5% of the total tax due for up to five months. If there is underpayment for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, there will be a penalty of 0.5% of the tax due. Additional interest charges of 0.54% accrue each month that Form 2290 is not filed. This is why it is important to not only file Form 2290 but pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax as well.

This is why it is important for you not to miss this deadline. If throughout the duration of a tax year, a qualifying vehicle drives 5,000 miles or less, or 7,500 miles or less if used for agricultural purposes, Form 2290 must still be filed but no tax will be owed for this vehicle and it will be considered suspended by the IRS. This is something that every driver of a vehicle weighing 55,000 pounds or more should know. One of these options is the ability to claim credits on Form 2290. When it comes to this option, there are several instances that would require you to claim a credit on your Form 2290. These instances include having sold a vehicle, having a vehicle stolen or destroyed, or having a vehicle not exceed the mileage limit when it had already been filed as not suspended.

How would you claim credits on Form 2290?

When filing Form 2290 you will have the option to claim credit vehicles. You will specify the reason for claiming the credit as well as the vehicle’s information, including the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Here you will state whether the vehicle was sold, stolen or destroyed, or didn’t exceed the mileage limit.

Sold Vehicle

If you sell your vehicle, you are able to claim a credit on that vehicle when you go to file your IRS Form 2290. When filing Form 2290 you will have the option to input credit vehicle information. Here is where you will specify that you have sold a vehicle. You will need to specify information about this sold vehicle including the VIN, the date sold, and the buyer’s information. Once you state this information you will be able to claim a credit for the months you no longer owned the vehicle.

Stolen or Destroyed Vehicle

If your vehicle is stolen or destroyed, you have the ability to claim a credit on that vehicle when you file Form 2290 as well. In the section on Form 2290 where you can claim credit for vehicles, you will enter the vehicle’s information such as the VIN, make, and model. You will indicate the date it was stolen or destroyed, this way you will be getting a credit for the months that you did not have the vehicle on the road or in your possession.

Vehicle that did not exceed the mileage limit

Another instance where you can claim a credit on a vehicle when filing your Form 2290 is by not exceeding the mileage limit. Form 2290 is filed for the upcoming tax year. If you actually traveled less than 5,000 miles, or 7,500 miles if it is used for agricultural purposes, during the tax year but did not originally file the vehicle as suspended, you have the option to claim a credit for this vehicle. On Form 2290 you will enter the vehicle’s information and then specify that it did not exceed the mileage limit. In this instance, you will receive credit for the full tax amount paid for that vehicle for that tax year. If mileage wasn’t exceeded then you will also give the details about this vehicle.

Other Options for Claiming Credits

Another option that is available to filers to claim credit for a vehicle that was sold, stolen or destroyed, or did not exceed the mileage limit is to file Form 8849 Schedule 6. This IRS tax form is designed to get credit back for a vehicle that meets the requirements. In this case, you do not have to file it on your Form 2290 as a credit vehicle but it is a separate tax form entirely designed to request the credit back from that vehicle. All you need for this form is the vehicle’s information and a detailed explanation of why the form is being filed. Form 8849 is processed manually by the IRS however, so it could possibly take up to a year or more to get the credit for your qualifying vehicle back. If you would rather wait until the next time you file Form 2290 if you still have a truck to file for, then you are able to add these credit vehicles to your Form 2290 instead and the vehicle credits will be processed at the same time as your Form 2290.

ExpressTruckTax Offers the Best Solution for Filing Vehicle Credits

When you file Form 2290 with TSNAmerica, adding vehicle credits is made easy. What does it mean? What does it mean? The first used month refers to the first month that you put your truck on the road during the specific tax year and does not have to do with the date on your tags. The Form 2290 tax year is July 1 to June 30. If a truck has been put on the road for the first time in the middle of a tax year then the month you put the truck on the road will be your first used month. If your truck has been on the road for longer, however, your first used month will be July. Your first used month along with the weight of your vehicle is what determines how much your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) will be once you file your Form 2290.

Why Use TSNAmerica to file your Form 2290?

TSNAmerica makes filing your Form 2290 faster and easier. We thank all the members of the trucking industry who have been hard at work shipping turkeys all across the nation. About 46 million were delivered all over just so people can enjoy a traditional meal with their families.

If you are going to be OTR this holiday we hope that when you get the chance to go home you will be surrounded by family and friends to enjoy your own special turkey dinner. However, you can still enjoy a turkey meal on the road.

Cook Your Own Meal?

Of course, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can try cooking a meal right in your rig.

Our team tried just that this year with mixed results. Check out our attempt to make a Thanksgiving meal with nothing but truckstop items below!

Where Truckers Can Find Turkey

But if you want to take a break from chaotic Thanksgiving travel to enjoy your own turkey lunch or dinner complete with a slice of pie then you can head to a restaurant like Cracker Barrel. Cracker Barrels usually provide excellent truck parking and have a comfortable, at-home atmosphere to make your Thanksgiving meal warm and welcoming.

You can also head to Denny’s for an excellent turkey meal. Because a lot of truck stops like Flying J have Denny’s built-in then it will make for a convenient stop to rest, shower, enjoy some turkey, and more.

Other notable places serving up awesome Thanksgiving meals include Iron Skillet, Country Pride, and more.

But what if we told you that there are places to score free turkey? Hold onto your britches, because it’s true! Head to the Boise Stage Shop in Boise Idaho off of I-84 exit 71 for a free turkey dinner with trimmings.

You can also head to the Cowboy Cafe in Lyman, Wyoming for an all-inclusive turkey dinner.

With the 2021-22 Form 2290 renewal season happening right now, you should have already filed your heavy vehicle use tax. But many of you may still be wondering if you can file using your Social Security Number.

Unfortunately, the good old days of simply using your Social Security Number to file those 2290’s are long gone, and if you don’t already have an EIN, you don't have much time left to apply for one before the August 31 deadline.

What’s an EIN?

An EIN, also known as an Employer Identification Number or a Federal Tax Number, is a unique nine-digit number that is used to file heavy vehicle use tax. TSNAmerica can help you get one, right now!

EIN numbers:

Contain nine digits in the form of XX-XXXXXXX

Cannot be transferred or cancelled

Are used for business activities only

Should not be used in place of your SSN

Why Do I Need One Now?

You may be wondering why you should begin this process now if you haven’t already. Well, the process of filing for and receiving an active EIN can be a bit time-consuming, and if not done in time, can delay your 2290 filing and even potentially cost you late penalties.

On average, it takes the IRS 10 business days to activate an EIN, and in some cases, it can even take up to 15. Until your EIN becomes active, your return will be rejected again, and again, and again. With the August 31 deadline only 18 days away, it's time to get that EIN, now!

How Can I Get One?

Although the process of obtaining an EIN is free through the IRS, it can be somewhat of a daunting task to handle on your own. The good news is that even if you don’t have the time to go through the strenuous process of filing and waiting for an EIN to become active, we can do it for you!

Truck Services of North America specializes in making the entire process as simple and hands-off as possible for truck owners and operators. TSNAmerica’s tax specialists provide countless services for truckers and will take care of the EIN process in its entirety with a simple five-minute phone call.

Be sure to exercise caution, however, as there is no shortage of people out there charging upwards of $400 in return for assistance with the process. TSNAmerica provides this service for only $80.

After you have your active EIN, there’s only one thing left to do and that’s to file your 2290. Don’t want to deal with that process either? With another simple five-minute phone call, TSNAmerica will take care of that for you too and have your stamped Schedule 1 sent to you in a matter of minutes. If your return is rejected for any reason, TSNAmerica will even make any necessary changes and resubmit your 2290 until it is accepted by the IRS.

Misplaced Your EIN?

If you have already received your EIN number but forgot or misplaced it, here’s what you can do:

If you’ve ever E-filed your 2290 with our friends over at ExpressTruckTax, then your EIN is automatically stored in your account. Just log in and view your business details on your dashboard, or pull up a previously filed return to find your EIN.

Check with the bank or the institution that you applied for a license with. Both should have your EIN on record.

If all else fails, call the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line at 1-800-829-4933. After you verify your identity, the IRS will be able to provide you with your EIN.

Over the last few years dashboard cameras (dash cams) have become the must-have accessory for road voyagers. Next, to artificial intelligence, this new device has some hefty pros and cons. If you’re considering getting a dash cam for your next long-haul we have made a list of things for you to think about. Before you press record or invest in a dashcam we want you to make sure it’s the right thing for your truck.

Dash cameras can come in handy and can also lead to tragedy. Knowing the ins and outs of the specific camera you purchase is the most beneficial way to be sure it is right for you and the long-hauls you’ll be making. Hopefully, these basic pros and cons will give you an idea of what to expect from truckers new favorite things.

Pros

There are some obvious pros to dash cams that are changing the game for truckers and one of those would be that it prevents staged accidents. Often times passenger vehicles blame large trucks for accidents that just never happened. It’s easy to play the blame game when there are no witnesses or proof. Statistics say that of the car-truck crashes approximately 80 percent of them were at the fault of passenger vehicles. This number may be increased as more dash cams are installed. Dash cams can save you from a rise in insurance and keep you from being blamed for a staged accident.

Other Pros of Dashcams Include the Following:

Improve Driving Skills

CDL instructors and company freight trainers are beginning to use dashcams to train new drivers and help prevent common mistakes. Dash cams are becoming a new method of learning and are creating a culture of safety on the road. Some dash cams can even store information technology that may assist in the training process. CDL training is slowly improving with the help of gadgets like dash cameras.

Document Your Trip

Being away from family on long-hauls can be extremely tough, but once you come home watching the footage from the dashcam will give you a chance to bond with loved ones.

Prevents Theft

Cargo theft can cost you thousands, but with the use of a dash cam, you can capture the culprits and possibly retrieve the stolen cargo.

Cons

The cons of dash cams are a little lighter than the pros, but there are a few things that should be considered.

Driving Distraction

Dash cams can easily be a distraction. Technology has a mind of its own and while you’re driving something may happen and you feel the urge to fiddle. The combination of fiddling with one hand and using the other to operate a 55,000-pound truck may not end the best way.

Rule Breaking

There are some states where recording without consent is illegal. You may be arrested, charged, or even fined, so making sure you are aware of the laws of each state line you cross will save you from facing some heavy consequences.

The Best of The Best

Here is a list of five to performing and highly rated dashboard cameras truckers across the world are investing in. *In no particular order

May 17, 2021 is approaching fast. For some, it’s their individual tax deadline but for those who have a lot on their plate and too much to wrap up, it's the deadline to file Form 4868. It may not seem like it, but the IRS is somewhat reasonable. They realize you could have possibly misplaced important documents and need more time, unexpected life events happen, and time can simply just slip away. This is why they have created Form 4868.

The Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S Individual Income Tax Return (better known as Form 4868) extends the deadline of the income tax return as far as six-months (October 15, 2021).

The 3 Ways To Request A Form 4868

Pay Electronically: When you choose this method you don’t need to file Form 4868. By making a payment the IRS will automatically process an extension of time to file when you pay part or all of your estimated income tax electronically. This can be done online or over the phone.

E-File: You can e-file from your personal computer. Be sure to have a copy of your previous tax return. This information will be needed for verification. At this time you can choose whether or not to make a payment online, or send it in via postal mail.

Paper Filing: With paper filing, all you will need to do is fill out a paper Form 4868. You can choose to send it into the IRS by mail. Be mindful that if you are a fiscal year taxpayer, you must file a paper Form 4868.

Form Sections

Form 4868 is broken down into two parts. The first being identification and the second is where you’ll plug in all tax information.

Part I - Identification
This is the section where your name(s) will go. If you are filing a joint return you must list the names of both spouses, so they appear on the return. Mailing addresses, Social Security number (SSN), and employer identification number (EIN) are also fields included in this section.

Part II - Individual Income Tax
In this section is where you’ll be filling out the estimate of total tax liability, be sure to be as accurate as possible. Total payments, balance due, and the amount you’ll be paying will also need to be inserted here. Have these important pieces of information on hand for quick filing.

Did you know that filing an extension doesn’t put you at higher risk of being audited? Generally, an extension is issued automatically and they won’t hassle you about why you are in need of an extension. So there is no need to pull out the old, “My dog ate my homework” excuse.

Take the time to put in your extension today. We’d rather you be safe than sorry and paying some pretty costly penalties.

What do you do when you need to travel somewhere that you’ve never been and you don’t have proper authority?

Well, it can be tough if you lack IRP credentials and can’t legally travel in those jurisdictions.

So what do you do? Thankfully, you can get a temporary permit.

Who Needs Temporary Trip & Fuel Permits?

If you normally don’t travel interstate but find yourself needing to travel on a longer haul, temporary permits were created just for you.

So if you normally only work in West Virginia, but end up on a haul that takes you to Ohio, a temporary trip or fuel permit will be required.

So what are these permits?

Trip Permits: These are designed for you if you are traveling to a jurisdiction you lack credentials for. You will need a temporary trip permit in lieu of IRP registration. Thankfully, a temporary trip permit is a great solution for sporadic interstate travel, but are not an economical solution for long term freight solutions.

If you find yourself needing permits more than a few times a year, it is more economical to register under IRP or the state tax license required for the jurisdictions you’re traveling in.

Trip permits must be obtained prior to entering the jurisdiction, and since processing costs and times vary by state, it’s best to inquire as soon as you know you’ll need one.

Temporary Fuel Permit: When you’re traveling interstate, you can get a temporary fuel permit issued in place of the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) registration.

Like trip permits, these must be obtained before traveling into the jurisdiction you are not licensed to operate in.

Best of all, most permits are issued same day! Whether you’re headed to Michigan, Texas, or Ohio, trip permits will help you travel interstate with ease!

If you need a trip or fuel permit, reach out to the state you will be traveling through to obtain your temporary permit.
It is always a good thing to be grateful for what you have, but it is also wise to be mindful that you can make more. Maximizing your career as a truck driver is easier said than done, but with determination you can make it happen.

There are a number of avenues that can be chosen to make a significant increase in your salary. We want to see you thrive in your career, so we are giving you a bit of insight into how exactly you can make the trucking industry work for you.

Add Some CDL Endorsements

Passing the CDL exam is a huge accomplishment and if you've made it past that step it certainly deserves a pat on the back. There are however certain things your CDL can’t do for you.

By adding extra permissions to your CDL you will be allowed to carry loads the CDL alone won’t permit you to. Having additional endorsements will give you a competitive advantage over other drivers, allowing you to have an opportunity to choose between loads that generally pay more. Getting your HazMat endorsement or Tanker vehicle endorsement will help in increasing your salary.

Gain Additional Experience

There are a few things truckers are required to have knowledge of, but a lot of times that knowledge only comes by experience. Experience is one of the most important criteria for truckers to have in order to get a competitive salary. Experience takes time, and getting to the point where you are making the big bucks requires a bit of patience.

It is proven that drivers with 5 to 8 years of experience earn anywhere between $50,000 and $70,000, including benefits. In comparison to inexperienced drivers, who make an average of $18 per hour, experienced drivers can make up to $50 per hour. Talk about a major difference.

Reputation Goes A Long Way

We’ve all been taught that reputation goes a long way and in the trucking industry it is no different. With a clean performance record truckers are presented with better driving opportunities that lead to better pay.

Companies are interested in protecting their reputation and hiring someone whose reputation coincides with that is ideal. Having a good reputation isn’t up to anyone else, but you. The money is out there, you just have to work hard for it.

Get With The Times

By improving your IT knowledge you are already more sought after than drivers with tons of experience, who still choose to use paper logging methods. Anyone who refuses to adapt to the modern age we are currently in are slowly being weaseled out. By being up on the latest IT trends you are now a more valuable asset to the industry. This makes your time more valuable to the company you’re with.

It is not possible to dodge hard work on your way up the industry ladder. In order to get paid more, you are going to have to do a lot more than ask for a raise. There are large salaries available in the trucking industry, it just requires people with a certain type of caliber to access them.
Aside from compliance requirements, there are a couple of things to consider before purchasing your dream ELD. Taking the time to know what game-changing features that make your job a whole lot easier will save you time and money.

The ELD Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations:

Requires ELD use by commercial drivers who are required to prepare hours-of-service (HOS) records of duty status (RODS).

Sets ELD performance and design standard, and requires ELDs to be certified and registered with FMCSA.

Establishes what supporting documents drivers and carriers are required to keep.

Prohibits harassment of drivers based on ELD data or connected technology (such as fleet management system).

Provides recourse for drivers who believe they have been harassed.

Three Add-Ons for the ELD Feature Checklist

#1 Instant Messaging

There is no requirement for having an instant messaging feature including with your ELD, but this feature would enable all parties to stay in direct communication during a route. Streamlined communication between drivers and dispatch aids in dissolving miscommunication and confusion. Similar features can be found in apps like the TruckLogics app.

#2 Dash Camera

For some, the use of a recording device may seem like a disaster waiting to happen but, 100% of truck drivers who were falsely accused of being at fault of a truck-passenger accident would agree that they wished there were proof to show they weren’t to blame.

Not only does a dash camera protect individuals and companies against fraudulent claims, but it also can be used for education purposes in training processes for more effective coaching.

There are also a number of insurance carriers who recognize the benefits dash cameras have on the safety and reward forward-thinking companies with reduced subsidies and premiums.

#3 Safety Alerts

Many ELDs have features that help in improving safety on the road, but there are some that take it a little further in offering alerts on not just speeding, but hard braking, and lane departures.

ELD Exemptions

There are exceptions to the new mandated requirements. Even though it seems as if the world is going full-on electronic, time cards and paper RODs fall in line with those being exempt.

Drivers who operate under the short-haul exceptions are able to continue using timecards, and those who use paper RODs less than 8 times over a 30-day span are exempt as well. The 30-day period is not restricted to a single month but does apply to any 30-day period.

Drivers who operate a vehicle manufactured before 2000, based on the VIN they qualify to no have to make the transition along with drivers conducting drive-away-tow-away operations, in which the vehicle being driven is the commodity being delivered. At this time, with the exemption being likely to change, transporters of livestock and insects are not required to have an ELD and are not required by the FMCSA to carry documents regarding the exemption.

Meeting ELD Compliance

When searching for the perfect ELD device there are several aspects to consider. The main aspect transporters should look for is whether or not the device is registered at FMCSA.

A compliant ELD solution will provide:

Separate accounts for administrators, both non-drivers and drivers.

Integral Synchronization with the Electronic Control Module (ECM).

Automatic recording of information such as; location, date, time, engine hours, vehicle miles, and driver identification.

Although there are basic compliance requirements for ELDs it is wise to make sure the selected device offers the use of cellular networks, USB, and even Bluetooth.

The cellular network feature is vital in transmitting data between engine-connected vehicles and smartphones and tablets. The most reliable way of transmitting information is through the use of US and Bluetooth, in the event that there is no cellular service.

Our Recommendation

KeepTruckin is our number 1 recommendation. It has all these features and more! Plus, as the biggest ELD provider on the market, they have the most integrations with other trucking solutions. For instance, if you use TruckLogics, the market-leading TMS, you can import your mileage and fuel information for quick IFTA reporting.

Learn more about TruckLogics and KeepTruckin today!

You’ve got to keep up with drivers, dispatching, expenses, truck service intervals, clients, insurance, and more (and that’s not even including your quarterly IFTA and yearly HVUT taxes).

So how do you keep up with all of it? Luckily, we’ve got just the trucking management software to help you save time and money.

What TruckLogics trucking management software can do for you

OTR expense tracking

Pass off some responsibility to your drivers by letting them track their own expenses on the road. With the TruckLogics mobile app, they can notate expenses like fuel-ups, per diem, and just about anything else. You can even have them capture receipts right from their phone so you don’t have to rifle through physical receipts later.

This one trucking management software feature can save you from a lot of unnecessary data entry and wasted time.

Maintenance scheduling

Add service intervals to individual trucks in the Truck Zone digital garage. Whether you select a certain amount of time or a certain number of miles, TruckLogics will automatically update you when it’s time for maintenance. You can create truck service intervals for any kind of maintenance and even enter preferred servicer information.

IFTA tracking

With TruckLogics, you can generate pre-calculated reports for IFTA filing. As you assign individual trucks to specific dispatches and notate their fuel consumption, TruckLogics will keep that information on file for quarterly IFTA reports. All you have to do is enter the information from TruckLogics reports into the IFTA form and you’re good to go.

Check calls

In addition to allowing your drivers to manually send check calls to clients from our mobile app, Truckloguics now supports automated geofencing check calls. This means that your clients will receive automatic updates when your drivers leave or pick up or arrive. These updates can be fully customized.

Expense reports

TruckLogics will automatically generate business reports for you, based on information like 'Cost Per Mile', 'Revenue Per Mile', and 'Profit Per Mile'. This way you can see what routes, clients, and drivers are most profitable for you. TruckLogics gives you unparalleled control of and visibility into your trucking business.

Ready or not, the 4th quarter IFTA deadline is here! That means you need to file your IFTA return with your base jurisdiction (home state) by midnight tonight or you will have expensive penalties to face. This may seem like a hassle since IFTA can take hours of figuring out complicated calculations to complete.

However, with the help of our sister product, ExpressIFTA, you can actually quickly and easily prepare your IFTA report and use it to instantly complete your return. Plus, we’re going to go over the IFTA basics so you’ll have everything you need to know.

The IFTA Deadline Basics

First of all, IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement. It was put in place for the purpose of simplifying fuel reporting by those who operate qualifying motor vehicles in two or more jurisdictions. This agreement includes the lower 48 United States and 1 Canadian provinces.

IFTA reporting actually makes a major difference, because before it was put into place each state had their own complicated rules and regulations for fuel use reporting. Now the quarterly IFTA return is used to easily determine the net tax refund due to and redistribute taxes from collecting states to states that are due.

Your vehicle qualifies for IFTA if you travel between two or more jurisdictions and:

Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or more

Has a gross registered vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or more

Has three or more axles, regardless of weight and/or

Is used in combination when the weight of the combination exceeds 26,000 pounds in gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight.

To comply with IFTA you will need to apply for your IFTA license with your base jurisdiction (home state). Be sure to keep it in your cab at all times. You will also receive two IFTA decals that you need to place on your driver door. Then you will need to complete your IFTA return four times a year.

In order to complete your return you will need to provide the following information:

Total miles traveled per jurisdiction

Total gallons of fuel consumed per jurisdiction

The total tax-paid gallons of fuel purchased per jurisdiction, and

The current tax rate per jurisdiction

But it’s no secret that well-maintained, up-to-date vehicles will have fewer breakdowns, get better gas mileage, and cost you less money.

So how do you keep track of truck service intervals and keep them running longer? Here are our top tips for keeping your truck service intervals up-to-date.

Track mileage from your computer

It's not good enough just to have paper logs or ELDs. Neither of those can send you automated updates to remind you of service intervals. What you need is a software that tracks your mileage ahead of time-based on dispatch information, and then applies that to the specific truck running the route.

Fortunately, our sister product TruckLogics does just that. When you enter dispatch information, you can attach a truck or trailer and TruckLogics will keep track of how many miles it has run. Depending on the service interval preferences, TruckLogics will send you automatic updates when it’s time for truck or trailer maintenance.

Track all kinds of maintenance

But what if you want to check electrical components every several months, in addition to getting the tires serviced every several thousand miles? TruckLogics can send you reminders about that too.

We hope you’re having a great holiday season so far, whether you’re on the road working hard, or just relaxing at the house with some friends and family.

Without you truckers, this holiday wouldn’t be possible. No Christmas trees, no turkey dinners, and no presents. That’s right, we have you all to thank for all the wonderful presents nestled under our trees this Christmas.

Don’t forget that with the end of the year, in addition to all the New Year’s festivities, comes several trucking renewal deadlines.

End of the Year Trucking Deadlines

UCR:

The deadline for renewing your UCR registration is December 31, so you’ll need to have that done before the end of the year. We understand just how difficult and time-consuming this process actually is. So if you need help or want someone to take care of this pesky registration for you, then you know who to call.

HVUT:

The IRS will shut down from December 25 until mid-January. That means if you still need a 2020-21 Form 2290, you need to file before the shutdown. The IRS will not process any forms during the shutdown.

So while it may not be something that can be wrapped, bagged, or even placed under the tree, give yourself the gift of TSNAmerica this holiday season. With all the bustle going on around this time of year, who has time to deal with registrations and renewals? Only us—that’s who. So give us a call at 877.520.8640 and let us make your holiday season by taking the paperwork out of your way!

Please note that we will be out of the office on Christmas eve, Christmas day, New Year’s eve, and New Year’s day, so if you need anything during that time, we’ll be offering emergency email support during those times at support@tsnamerica.com.
Trucking is a huge industry in America today. In fact the number of trucking jobs in America has increased by over 30,000 since April 2020.

You’ve decided to take advantage of that.

Are you set on starting a trucking company, but don’t know where to start?

You’ve come to the right place.

Check out this guide for everything you need on how to start a trucking company.

How to Start a Trucking Company

Paperwork

When starting a trucking company, the first step is to form an LLC.

Owning a trucking company as an LLC will protect you as a business owner and offer tax advantages.

To form an LLC, most states require that you appoint a registered agent. This person will accept and send legal documents on your behalf and act as the direct point of contact with the state.

You’ll also need an EIN, or Employee Identification Number, for your LLC. This number is unique to your business and required for many aspects of operation, such as submitting certain tax forms.

After that, there’s more paperwork coming your way. Obtain necessary business licenses and permits, including USDOT Number, MC (Motor Carrier Operating Authority) Number, UCR (Unified Carrier Registration), and IRP (International Registration Plan).

How to Run a Trucking Company

Once you’ve gotten started owning a trucking company and have a truck, maintenance and growth are the name of the game!

Above all else, the best answer for how to run a trucking company is consistency.

Owning a trucking company requires awareness at all times. Track your expenses, stay tax compliant, and understand your finances.

Missing deadlines or expiration dates can cause you to lose good standing with the IRS. Plus, you’ll accrue penalties and affect your cash flow.

At this point, you may have mastered how to open a trucking company, but maintaining one is a whole new beast.

Let’s talk about the tools, such as owner-operator trucking software, that can help get you there.

Trucking Business Software

The best way to stay on top of your trucking company is with trucking business software.
