Medical Certificate Extended But Self-Certification Deadline Remains Jan 30, 2014

The FMCSA announced an extension of the requirement for interstate commercial drivers to carry paper copies of their medical certifications with them while operating a commercial motor vehicle until January 30, 2015.

However, they did NOT extend the deadline to self-certify their status with their State Driver License Agency (SDLA).  That deadline remains January 30, 2014. The FMCSA website has the following FAQ’s to help you meet the new Federal medical certification requirements.

The process to self-certify varies from state to state. The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators have State-By-State instructions for submitting medical certificates.

ATTN: CDL Holders

By January 30, 2014, all Commercial Driver License (CDL) holders must provide information to their State Driver Licensing Agency (SDLA) under the new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations that went into effect as of January 30, 2012.

Failure to provide and keep current medical certificates on file with their SDLA risk losing their CDL.  See the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators for state specific requirements and instructions.

The FMCSA website has the following FAQ’s to help you meet the new Federal medical certification requirements:

1. What must I do to comply with the new requirements (76 FR 70661) for making my medical certification part of my CDL driving record?
2. How do I determine which of the 4 categories of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operation I should self-certify to with my State Driver Licensing Agency (SDLA)?
3. What if I am an existing commercial driver’s license (CDL) holder who does not have a license renewal, upgrade or transfer between January 30, 2012 and January 30, 2014?
4. After I provide my State Driver Licensing Agency (SDLA) with my unexpired medical examiner’s certificate, do I still have to carry an original or copy of my medical examiner’s certificate?
5. What should I do with the medical examiner’s certificate beginning on January 30, 2014?
6. What will happen if I do not provide my State Driver Licensing Agency (SDLA) with my self-certification and if required, my medical examiner’s certificate and any required variance document by January 30, 2014?
7. What should I do when my medical certificate and/or variance is about to expire?
8. What happens if my medical examiner’s certificate or variance expires before I provide my State Driver Licensing Agency (SDLA) with a new one?

ATTN: Ohio CDL Holders

On November 5, 2013, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) released a notice to remind all Commercial Driver License (CDL) holders of the new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations that went into effect as of January 30, 2012.

All CDL holders must update their driving record with the BMV by self-certifying the type of commercial driving by January 30, 2014 or they will no longer be eligible to operate a commercial motor vehicle.  Currently there are 120,000 Ohio CDL holders who have not done so and are at risk of losing their CDL privileges.

The Ohio BMV realizes that many CDL holders are not aware of these changes and sent a notice out to the Ohio Trucking Association and the Ohio Association of Movers to help inform the CDL holders.
