Form 2290: Everything You Need To Know And More

Form 2290: Everything You Need To Know And More

Are you new to the trucking industry? Have you been driving a truck for a while? No matter how long you have been driving a truck, something every truck driver must know about is Form 2290. To better understand the form, you need to know what the form is for and what information the form requires.

What is Form 2290?

If you drive a vehicle that has a Taxable Gross Weight of over 55,000 pounds and drives over 5,000 miles a year, 7,500 miles if the vehicle is used for agricultural purposes, then Form 2290 must be filed and the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) must be paid. If a vehicle travels less than 5,000 miles in a year or 7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles, it is considered suspended. In this case Form 2290 still needs to be filed, but you will be exempt from paying the HVUT.

What Information is Needed to File Form 2290?

Form 2290 requires several pieces of information to be filled out. The information entered helps determine how much tax is owed for the HVUT.

Business Name and Address

When you fill out Form 2290, it asks you for the name of the business you own or work for as well as the address of that business. The form will also ask you what type of business you work for. If you are unsure of the business type, you can select the “others or not sure” option.

EIN (Employer Identification Number)

Your Employer Identification Number (EIN) is required to fill out Form 2290. The EIN is a unique nine-digit number that is issued to every business owner by the IRS. If you just recently obtained an EIN, it could take up to 15 business days for it to become active and recognized by the IRS.

VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-digit code unique to each vehicle. Because no two vehicles have the same VIN number, it makes it easier to identify the vehicle. This number can be found on the vehicle’s registration, its title, or on the actual vehicle itself.

Taxable Gross Weight

The Taxable Gross Weight of a vehicle is determined by adding the total weight of the truck, the trailer, and the maximum load the truck is able to carry. This is used to determine the tax amount that needs to be paid for the HVUT. The higher the Taxable Gross Weight of a vehicle, the higher tax owed. If a vehicle’s Taxable Gross Weight is less than 55,000 pounds, then Form 2290 does not need to be filed for this vehicle.

First Used Month

A vehicle’s First Used Month (FUM) is the month that you first put the vehicle on the road. The last day of the following month is when Form 2290 is due for the current tax year. If you first put a truck on the road in October of 2022, the deadline to file the 2022-2023 Form 2290 is November 30th, 2022. In this case, the rate is prorated since you are only filing for part of the tax year.

The current tax year begins on July 1st, 2022, and ends on June 30th, 2023. If you have had your truck on the road for longer than a year, you will put your first use month as July and will be paying the full tax for the upcoming tax year.

What’s the easiest way to file Form 2290?

The IRS recommends that you e-file Form 2290 as opposed to paper filing. If you paper-file your Form 2290 it will take much longer for the IRS process. By e-filing your Form 2290 you will receive your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes. The stamped Schedule 1 is needed in order to obtain tags and the registration for your vehicle.

How do I submit my payment to the IRS?

The IRS accepts multiple payment options in order to pay you HVUT. Regardless of which payment method you choose, the payment must be made by August 31st in order to avoid any late fees.

Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)

One of the options you have to pay your HVUT is through Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW). If you choose this payment method, the tax payment will be withdrawn from your account as soon as your Form 2290 gets accepted.

Check or Money Order

A Check or Money order is another acceptable form of payment for the HVUT, but you have to make sure that the payment is made before the deadline.

Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)

Another option that is available to pay your HVUT is through the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). In order to use this payment method, you must have a or create an account and initiate this payment transfer at www.EFTPS.gov.

Truck Driving Tips To Help You Stay Alert On The Road

Early mornings, late nights, long days, and crazy sleep schedules while on the road can make it difficult to stay alert.

Staying awake and alert for long periods of time plays a critical part in your safety and productivity as you Keeping America Trucking.

Here are 10 truck driving tips to help you stay alert on the road.

Truck Driving Tips To Help You Stay Alert On The Road

1) Avoid Exhaustion

NEWS FLASH! You and your fuel tank can’t be on “E” prior to your next haul! Adequate sleep is necessary to avoid exhaustion and reckless driving while on the road.

Take more frequent naps and get as many hours of sleep as possible. The more rested you are the more alert you will be!

2) Stay Away From Large Doses of Caffeine

Many drivers depend on caffeine to get them through the day. Although a cup of coffee here and there won’t hurt, too much caffeine will lead to a caffeine overload and ultimately put your health at risk.

Go easy on the caffeine, please!

3) Don’t Eat Large Portions of Food

As tempting as it may be, you can’t eat it all. A full belly will make you sleepy and cause you to not be fully alert while on the road.

4) Excercise

Taking a quick 5-minute walk at your next truck stop or rest area will give your body a new-found boost of energy that you need and even help you burn a few calories.

5) Take a Nap

Jumpstart your next drive with a quick 15-20 minute nap before hitting the road. Sleeping for less than one hour gives your body the energy it needs to stay awake longer.

6) Avoid Lights with High Contrast

The high contrast between pitch black and bright lights causes your eyes to feel sleepy. Be cautious when driving and avoid looking directly into bright lights.

7) Turn the Volume Up

Let’s get this driving party started! Upbeat music helps keep your energized, especially when you sing along with it.

8) Take Vitamins

The best vitamins to take for a boost of energy are Vitamins B & C! Take them alongside a healthy meal and get the energy you need for the long haul.

9) Open the Window

If you’re like me, a crisp breeze at night from outside will help keep you alert. Studies show that cold air gives your body a temporary boost and keep yous awake longer. Give it a try!

10) Pull over if you are tired

This one is a “no-brainer”. If you find yourself becoming tired or distracted during your haul, simply pull over and rest. Your safety, along with the safety of other drivers and haulers on the road, is extremely important.

Always get rest when needed!

Do You Need To File a Form 8849?

Trucker using form 2290 and form 8849

If you’re new to trucking the numbers used for necessary forms may be a bit overwhelming. There’s 2290s, 8849s, 4868s, 1099s, and 123s, we might be exaggerating with the 123s, but you get the gist, it’s a lot of forms and a lot of numbers to remember. We won’t bore you and got through each form 1 by 1, but we will tell you about the two most relevant ones for this filing period.

What is Form 2290?

The form that you have probably heard the most about, as of late is Form 2290. So what is Form 2290, and how does it relate to you, if at all.

Form 2290 is used to figure and pay the tax due on highway motor vehicles used. Your next question
is probably does it even apply to you, and the answer is it might. All vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that travel by highway is required to file a Form 2290.

After paying taxes you will be given a Stamped Schedule 1 that serves as proof of payment from the IRS. This document is important, as it is needed in order to register your commercial vehicle.

Do You Need to File Form 8849?

There are exemptions and claim suspensions that apply to some vehicles meeting certain requirements. The requirements are as follows:

  • The vehicle used 5,000 highway miles or less during the period.
  • The vehicle is an agricultural vehicle and used 7,500 miles or less during the period.
  • The Vehicle was stolen during the period
  • The vehicle was destroyed during the period
  • The vehicle was sold during the period

The above list leads us to the importance of Form 8849. If any of the above are true about a vehicle you owned then you must first file a Form 2290 and pay the correct amount of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) and then complete Form 8849.

Claims and Refunds

In order to claim credits or refunds for vehicles stolen, destroyed, sold, or only used for 5,000 miles or less and 7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles, the Form 8849 is required. The things you’ll need to file a Form 8849 are your name, address, details on the vehicle you are seeking a claim/refund for and your Employee Identification Number (EIN). Be sure to double-check that the EIN you are using is consistent with what the IRS has on file.

*If an EIN is needed you are able to apply for one online with the IRS.

File With Truck Services of North America

Truck Services of North America (TSNA) is offering pre-filing! File as early as today, with one phone call. Support team members are standing by to assist you with all of your Form 2290 needs.

New IRS Form 2290 Payment Options

Have You Heard About the New IRS Form 2290 Payment Options?

It may be hard to believe, but it’s already time to start filing your 2018-19 2290! If you’re currently thinking, “Wait, 2290 season doesn’t start until July?” then you would be correct, partially. Since we’ve worked hand-in-hand with the IRS for more than ten years now, we are excited to offer IRS Form 2290 filing for the 2018-19 tax year ahead of schedule. This is exclusive for ExpressTruckTax customers so you can get back to enjoying time with your family instead of worrying about filing your 2290 tax form.

IRS Payment Methods for Form 2290

When you file Form 2290 over the phone with TSNAmerica, all you have to do it give us your information and we will file on your behalf in a matter of minutes. When it is time to pay you can choose between 3 different payment options based on the most convenient method for you.

Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)

Provide your banking information (account and routing number) through TSNAmerica’s safe and secure system to authorize the IRS to debit the amount you owe from your bank account. It is important that your account has enough funds to cover the amount you owe.

The amount is generally withdrawn in 24 to 48 hours after providing authorization. Keep in mind that this involves your banking information, not your credit/debit card number.

If you need to cancel your payment contact IRS payment services at 1.888.353.4537 at least 2 days before the payment date.

EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System) is the electronic tax payment system used by the IRS. If you choose this payment option you will be taken to the EFTPS site, and you’ll create a free account. Please keep in mind that it can take up to 10 business days to establish this type of account.

To pay the IRS through EFTPS, you will provide your bank account information and verify that the IRS is allowed to withdraw your tax payment from that account. In order to make your payment by the deadline, you must schedule it before 8 p.m. the day before the deadline for it to be received by the IRS in time.

Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)

You can also pay the amount of HVUT you owe with a Check or Money Order. If you choose this option you will need to print your completed payment voucher, 2290-V, from page 11 of your completed 2290 Form and mail to the IRS by the August 31st deadline.

Make your check or money order payable to the United States Treasury. Also, you will need to include your name, address, EIN, the date, and the words “IRS Form 2290” with your payment.

Do not staple your payment and voucher together.

Send your payment and voucher 2290-V to:
Internal Revenue Service
P.O. Box 804525,
Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525

Remember, never send cash through the mail.

Important: If you have already paid your HVUT via Direct Debit or EFW and received a letter from the IRS saying they were unable to debit the funds there are a few likely causes:

- Your account and routing number were entered into ExpressTruckTax incorrectly. Even entering one character incorrectly will prevent the IRS from being able to withdraw the amount you owe.
- The IRS tried to debit your account, but you had insufficient funds. If you are even as little as 50 cents short then the IRS will not debit the funds.

If you receive a letter from the IRS saying they could not withdraw the funds from the bank account provided then you will need to send a check or money order to the IRS in order to pay the amount you owe by the August 31st deadline.

Form 2290 Errors, Corrections, and Amendments

Earlier this week, we braved the HVUT Form 2290 filing deadline for vehicles first-used in July. And we survived!

Now that the tax-filing commotion is dying down, it’s time to deal with the aftermath. Often while the dust is settling, those who filed on time begin to notice errors in the information they reported to the IRS.

Misspellings in names or addresses, VIN errors and more begin to crop up. But how do you correct a return that has been accepted? Will this error mean you owe more tax or will you be entitled to a refund?

Here are a few quick tips to help you figure it out. Of course, this is only the tip of the tax-filing iceberg, so if you’d like the real nitty-gritty details, it’s best to ask an expert (like us!).

Form 2290 Amendments may be filed for the three instances below.

  • VIN Correction: If your 2290 was accepted by the IRS, but you noticed a VIN error on your return, then you must file a VIN correction. Upon acceptance of the amendment, you will receive a new stamped Schedule 1 with the correct information. This correction should be filed immediately as an innaccurate Schedule 1 will lead to vehicle registration issues.
  • Suspended Vehicle Exceeds Mileage Limit: If you initially filed your vehicle as suspended (category W), but it exceeds the 5,000 mile limit (or 7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles), then you must promptly file this amendment to notify the IRS and pay the tax owed. This change must be filed by the end of the following month after the mileage was exceeded.
  • Increase in Gross Vehicle Weight: When filing Form 2290, vehicles are taxed, in part, according to weight category. If during the year, your load weight increases and causes your gross weight to extend into the next highest category, then this amendment should be filed. The filing is due by the end of the month after the increase takes place. You will be required to report the date that the increase began, and calculate tax-owed based upon that date.
For typos, misspellings, and name corrections, you must call the IRS directly to make the change. However, if you had Truck Services of North America file your 2290, then we’ll make any corrections for you!

Form 8849 Credits for Excise Taxes can be filed to request a refund on taxes paid!

There’s always a silver-lining, even with taxes. However, not all changes warrant money back. For instance, credits are not awarded for vehicles that operate at a lower gross vehicle weight than initially reported. Moreover, refunds are not given if a vehicle is not used for part of the year.

The following are qualifying events for a tax refund:
  • Vehicle is lost, stolen, or destroyed. In any of these events, refunds will be issued by filing Form 8849 along with Schedule 6, reserved for other claims and credits regarding Form 2290.
  • Vehicle traveled too few miles during the tax year. If your vehicle traveled 5,000 miles or less during the tax year (7,500 for agricultural vehicles), then you may file for a refund.

Rather than file for a refund, you may claim a credit on next year’s 2290 and apply it directly to that return, thereby reducing the amount of tax owed.

Throughout the tax year, changes are bound to occur. Instead of fumbling around with the six Schedules that go with Form 8849, why not have us handle it for you? We’ll not only get your money back faster, but we’ll turn your stressful experience into a distant memory by filing exactly what you need, right when you need it.

And best of all, we can file all of these form for you over the phone! Simply call us, give us your info, and then send us a consent form. We’ll then file on your behalf, and in the same day no less! You can’t find service like that, especially for our competitive pricing.

To see the array of services we offer, visit TSNAmerica.com. Then send us a Service Request Form, email us at support@TSNAmerica.com or call 803.386.0320.
