Your 4th Quarter IFTA Return Is Due Next Week

Ready or not, the 4th quarter IFTA deadline is here! That means you need to file your IFTA return with your base jurisdiction (home state) by midnight tonight or you will have expensive penalties to face. This may seem like a hassle since IFTA can take hours of figuring out complicated calculations to complete.

However, with the help of our sister product, ExpressIFTA, you can actually quickly and easily prepare your IFTA report and use it to instantly complete your return. Plus, we’re going to go over the IFTA basics so you’ll have everything you need to know.

The IFTA Deadline Basics

First of all, IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement. It was put in place for the purpose of simplifying fuel reporting by those who operate qualifying motor vehicles in two or more jurisdictions. This agreement includes the lower 48 United States and 1 Canadian provinces.

IFTA reporting actually makes a major difference, because before it was put into place each state had their own complicated rules and regulations for fuel use reporting. Now the quarterly IFTA return is used to easily determine the net tax refund due to and redistribute taxes from collecting states to states that are due.

Your vehicle qualifies for IFTA if you travel between two or more jurisdictions and:

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or more
  • Has a gross registered vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds or more
  • Has three or more axles, regardless of weight and/or
  • Is used in combination when the weight of the combination exceeds 26,000 pounds in gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight.
To comply with IFTA you will need to apply for your IFTA license with your base jurisdiction (home state). Be sure to keep it in your cab at all times. You will also receive two IFTA decals that you need to place on your driver door. Then you will need to complete your IFTA return four times a year.

In order to complete your return you will need to provide the following information:

  • Total miles traveled per jurisdiction
  • Total gallons of fuel consumed per jurisdiction
  • The total tax-paid gallons of fuel purchased per jurisdiction, and
  • The current tax rate per jurisdiction

Merry Christmas Trucking Nation!

Merry Christmas from everyone here at Truck Services of North America! We hope you’re having a great holiday season so far, whether you’re on the road working hard, or just relaxing at the house with some friends and family.

Without you truckers, this holiday wouldn’t be possible. No Christmas trees, no turkey dinners, and no presents. That’s right, we have you all to thank for all the wonderful presents nestled under our trees this Christmas.

Don’t forget that with the end of the year, in addition to all the New Year’s festivities, comes several trucking renewal deadlines.

End of the Year Trucking Deadlines

UCR:

The deadline for renewing your UCR registration is December 31, so you’ll need to have that done before the end of the year. We understand just how difficult and time-consuming this process actually is. So if you need help or want someone to take care of this pesky registration for you, then you know who to call.

HVUT:

The IRS will shut down from December 25 until mid-January. That means if you still need a 2020-21 Form 2290, you need to file before the shutdown. The IRS will not process any forms during the shutdown.

So while it may not be something that can be wrapped, bagged, or even placed under the tree, give yourself the gift of TSNAmerica this holiday season. With all the bustle going on around this time of year, who has time to deal with registrations and renewals? Only us—that’s who. So give us a call at 877.520.8640 and let us make your holiday season by taking the paperwork out of your way!

Please note that we will be out of the office on Christmas eve, Christmas day, New Year’s eve, and New Year’s day, so if you need anything during that time, we’ll be offering emergency email support during those times at support@tsnamerica.com.

The 4th Quarter IFTA Deadline is Almost Here

Hey, trucking nation! We hope you’re staying safe and warm out there. This winter has been one for the books so far. However, while navigating your trips around harsh winter storms don’t forget that tax season is here!

You know what's even harder than staying warm? Explaining to the IRS why you missed important tax deadlines! That’s why you shouldn’t let the 4th quarter IFTA deadline on January 31st sneak up on you.

The 4th Quarter IFTA Deadline is Almost Here

Because the 4th quarter IFTA due date is less than a month away, we’re here to help you prepare to file. In case you need a little refreshing, IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement that was put in place by the 48 contiguous United States and 10 Canadian provinces.

The purpose of IFTA was to simplify the reporting of fuel use by qualified motor vehicles traveling between two or more jurisdictions. The taxes collected are equally redistributed among each participating jurisdiction.

Your vehicle qualifies for IFTA if it:

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 pounds
  • Has two axles and a registered gross weight of 26,000 pounds
  • Has three or more axles regardless of weight
  • Or has a combination weight exceeding 26,000 pounds.
To comply with IFTA you will need to apply for your IFTA license with your jurisdiction or state where your vehicle is registered. Then keep it in your cab at all times. You will also receive two IFTA decals that you will need to keep on your driver’s side door. Plus, you have to file your IFTA return four times a year.

The following information is required to complete your IFTA return:

  • Total miles traveled per jurisdiction
  • Total gallons of fuel consumed per jurisdiction
  • Total tax paid gallons of fuel purchased per jurisdiction
  • And the current tax rate per jurisdiction.
If you fail to file your IFTA return you will have some expensive IFTA penalties to deal with. For example, if you don’t file by the deadline you will face a penalty of $50 or 10% of the total fuel tax you owe, depending on which amount is more.

On top of that, you will face a monthly penalty of .4167% of the total amount of IFTA tax you owe until you pay the amount in full. Your base jurisdiction also reserves the right to impose their own penalties and revoke your IFTA license and we know you don’t want that!

ExpressIFTA Is Your IFTA Reporting Solution

At TSNAmerica we have your back to help you easily prepare your IFTA report to file by the deadline. Simply check out our sister, ExpressIFTA to easily import and track all the information you need to complete your IFTA return online in one convenient location.

The process is quick and easy! You can import all of your data at once with the bulk upload feature or even directly upload all of your mileage information right from your GPS. However, you can also keep detailed trip sheet entries. ExpressIFTA lets you handle your reporting at your own pace.

Then at the end of each quarter, all of your totals will be automatically calculated in an easy to read IFTA report. Your IFTA report can be downloaded, printed, emailed, and used to instantly complete your return!

File 4th Quarter Highway Use Tax Returns Now

The filing period is now open for 4th Quarter Highway Use Tax.  Kentucky, New Mexico, New York & Oregon all require a use tax license if you operate in that state.  Each license requires a quarterly return must be filed, even if no miles were traveled in the state.  The 4th Quarter KYU, New Mexico Weight Distance & NY HUT Return filing deadline is January 31, 2014.  The 4th Quarter Oregon Weight Receipt Return filing deadline is February 28, 2014.

  • All commercial motor vehicles (except buses) with a gross weight of 60,000 lbs and over traveling into or through Kentucky must be registered with the state. Carriers with an active KYU Number are then required to file a quarterly return and pay mileage taxes to Kentucky. New qualifying vehicles must be listed with Kentucky prior to the vehicle entering the state. Temporary permits are also available.
  • All commercial motor vehicles with a gross weight in excess of 26,000 lbs. must be registered with the state before traveling into or through New Mexico. Entrance can be paid at the port if not registered; however, it is not cost effective to pay at the port unless you travel through New Mexico only once or twice per year. Once a Weight Distance Tax account in New Mexico is established quarterly reports must be filed and mileage tax paid.
  • Carriers operating certain commercial motor vehicles that weigh 18,000 lbs or greater in New York are required to register and obtain NYHUT tax credentials. Once a NYHUT account has been established, carriers must file and pay mileage tax on a quarterly basis.
  • All commercial carriers with a gross vehicle weight in excess of 26,001 lbs. must obtain a temporary or annual permit to travel into or through Oregon. Oregon does not belong to the International Fuel Tax Agreement; however, a proper tax permit must be obtained before entering this state. Heavy fines are imposed on carriers entering into Oregon without the proper credentials.
  • Oregon requires all new entrants to become bonded before permanent credentials are issued. Bonds may be placed by a Surety Company or posted with cash. The size of your fleet will determine the amount of the bond required.

4th Quarter Filing Period Now Open!

4th Quarter Filing Period for IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement), KYU (Kentucky Use Tax), New Mexico Weight Distance Tax, and NY HUT (New York Highway Use Tax) is now open. The deadline for 4th quarter filing is January 31, 2014 and we encourage you not to wait until the last minute to file.

If you first placed your vehicle on the road anytime during the month of December, you must file your Form 2290 by January 31, 2014. If a vehicle was used during any part of a month, the tax will be calculated for that month as a whole. For example, if a vehicle was used on December 20th, it will be taxed as though it was used the entire month. The tax will be prorated based on the number of months the vehicle will have been used during the tax year. So vehicles that were placed in service during the month of December will need to file HVUT using the Form 2290 by January 31, and the tax will be based on 6 months, instead of the full year.

As a premier processing agency, Truck Services of North America can assist with your your IFTA, NY HUT, KYU, and New Mexico Taxes as well as filing your Form 2290 over the phone.  We can help you obtain the necessary credentials and file your quarterly taxes for you. TSNA takes the paperwork out of your way. For more details contact us at TSNAmerica.com or call 803.386.0320.

Did You File 4th Quarter Returns?

If you have not yet filed your 4th Quarter IFTA, KYU, NY HUT, Oregon Weight-Mile or New Mexico Weight Distance returns, you missed the deadline! You want file as soon as possible to avoid further penalties and interest.

Failure to file an IFTA return, filing a late return, or failure to remit any or all tax due will result in a penalty of $50.00 or 10% of the net tax due to all member jurisdictions, whichever is greater.  Interest is computed on all delinquent taxes dues each jurisdiction at a rate of 1% per month.  Even if you have a net refund, interest still applies to each jurisdiction for any underpayment of fuels use tax to that jurisdiction and is calculated beginning the day after the due date of the return for each month, or fraction of a month, until paid. So the longer you are late, the more you will owe.

At Truck Services of North America, we make it simple by preparing and filing your quarterly returns for you, so you can avoid further penalties. TSNA takes the paperwork out of your way.  Contact us at TSNAmerica.com or give us a call 803.386.0320.
